Police on scooters and bikes are related, progressive, ideas, but I never expected to see a bike rack on the back of our tough looking police cars.
Kevin (on the phone in Maine), suggested that the police could go so far in the car and then continue by bike, where a car can’t or shouldn’t go. It brings to mind the New York police on horses.

Paidia Laboratory: feedback examines computer games as closed feedback systems, as servomechanisms or control chains that may or may not involve human elements. In an ongoing series of artistic experiments the feedback behaviour of games is studied and put in new contexts through modifications of hardware and software, creating an open structure of artefacts, schematics and patterns. The focus lies not on the usability of games, but rather on an archeology of interaction – determining the limits and boundaries of games in order to understand the media specific characteristics of computer games and the spaces they create.

Computerspielemuseum is the world’s first museum devoted to digital interactive entertainment culture. Since their opening in 1997, they have documented the development of the medium at over 30 national and international exhibitions. More than 300 exhibits are shown in their new permanent exhibition in an interactive and experiment-friendly environment that conveys the cultural history of computer and video games.

Just before bedtime – the boys are waiting for some St. Patrick’s day hot chocolate, and nick (age 9) is reading Chapter 7 of Ender’s Game to his little brother sequoia (age 5).

These aren’t the best photos, but i’m making them accessible in light of current news that a South Carolina middle school teacher is suspended for reading the same book – Ender’s Game. A parent complained to both the school and the police about pornographic material being read to their kid, and the school has responded by suspending the teacher.

How can a single complaint about a widely-read, 27-year-old book written for kids lead to a teacher’s suspension?

I can understand objecting to the personal views of Orson Scott Card, but that’s no reason to censor an excellent book or shut down a teacher who selects engaging subject matter.

What kid wouldn’t love a story about tiny kids who save humankind from nasty alien invaders by playing video games? The book also accurately foreshadows political manipulation in the Internet and Usenet (called “newsnet” in the book), and computer security, information warfare issues, and the trend towards younger and younger high-tech employees — all rolled into an awesome space adventure story. Totally Pornographic.

Got enough wires? Or computers?

Featuring my triple monitor desktop, with a LAN server sitting on top of it. And my pride & joy, my Lenovo Thinkpad W510. (Trying to compile a custom kernel, and wifi isn’t working. Iteration 17 should work, I hope!) Also, a Cr-48 Google Chrome laptop, a D-Link DIR-655 router, CA speaker system, and just more wires than I can really manage. But I do.

Not pictured: I also own a VPS, which runs my website: evaryont.me – go ahead, click! It’s really plain, nothing much to look at…

I have two shelves crammed full of photo albums. But nothing from the past two years. Now all the photos are stored on external hard drives. Some people say they’d miss looking through the albums. That is nice but I rarely do that and it’s easier to browse through the hardrive and nice to see the pictures enlarged on the screen. Which do you prefer?

I work for a video post production company, and we use a lot of hard drives. A large project will use upwards of 250 gigabytes (and we’re only a small company of four people – a big house would use terabytes) and keeping track of all the data can be a challenge. Often clients will come back to us months later to review footage or to use footage in next year’s highlights video or whatever. We catalogue the hard drives every now and then in a centralised database to make searching for all this stuff much easier. Yesterday was a cataloguing day after a large project, so I went through nearly every hard drive we have and updated the database – at this point there were 28 hard drives on my desk.

A productive day.

James L McCormack on the roof of the Evening Times building, Glasgow, in 1916 aged 26. He has just joined the army and is being sent to France. He must have wondered if this was the last time he would see Glasgow. He survived the war and went on to become sports editor of the paper. He was my grandfather and started to take me to football matches all around Glasgow when I was seven in the late 1960s. I admit it: I’m pretty much a huge geek. I have a lot of data, and I’m rather protective of it. Pictured here is 1.6 terabytes of storage, or 1,674 gigabytes. And what’s either wonderful or sad, depending how you look at it, is that I need more. Almost all of that storage is being used. A big ol’ 2 terabyte external drive like this one (www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11156) from LaCie would be great. Hint, hint.
